In 1948, City Engineering began as a small fabrication workshop. Fast forward to now, we have continued to develop a strong reputation as a trusted provider of steel fabricated and galvanized solutions.

At City Engineering Works (K) Limited, we ensure quality through our seamless management and control systems. We developed and perfected these systems by working on hundreds of diverse projects during our 8 decades in business.

  • - 1948

    Mohamed Bashir formed City Engineering Works in 1948. Combining his experience to provide small fabrication works to service the construction industry.
  • - 1960

    1960 – As they grew, they expanded to Busia road (current location). Developed galvanizing works. Added galvanized steel water tanks to portfolio of products and were the only company galvanizing at the time. CEW is the oldest and longest running galvanizer in Kenya.
  • - 1965

    1965- CEW began manufacturing hot water cylinders.
  • - 1970

    1970- Rafiki metal works was formed. Located in Nairobi, Sheikh Karume, utilizing galvanizing and fabrication skills as well as roll forming technology to introduce circular water tanks to the market.
  • - 1975

    1975- Dandora factory was launched, investing in Kenya’s first ever Induction furnace technology and a rolling mill in order to produce round bars. 1975- 1983 Mohammed Bashir joined by his 3 sons (Habib, Hafiz & Ayub). During this period city engineering ventured into government tenders and became the main supplier of fabrications steels for Kenya post office and Kenya Power and Lightning Company. Continued to build a reputation as a trusted market leader for quality product at competitive prices.
  • - 1985

    1985 – In line with plumbing background city engineering was the first to introduce pedrollo water pumps to the Kenya market, a product that s still regarded as the best pump available in the Kenyan market.
  • - 2000

    2000 – Invested in a new galvanizing line, utilizing Indian technology, The investment expanded capacity and efficiency of operations. Hot water cylinder line upgraded to produce more efficient insulated cylinders
  • - 2004

    The economy significantly deteriorated over the next few years and was greatly impacted by the power crisis Kenya suffered and would continue as such till 2004. Dandora was shut down and sold in 2003 The following market years marked a period of expansion as the Kenyan government began rural electrification development. City Engineering began investing in technology, including; mechanical presses, shearing machine, pneumatic presses and many more technologies. This enabled CEW to maintain market leadership and excellence by combining its log experience in fabrication and cutting-edge technology. CEW continues to invest in technology and still remains a leading supplier for Kenya Power (KPLC) and Rural Electrification Authority (REA).
  • - 2015

    2015 – Recognizing the growing demand of homes, Rafiki roofing Mabati was launched to provide high quality roofing to meet the needs of Kenyans. Rafiki roofing has quickly grown into a brand trusted for quality products and service, helping to provide homes all across Kenya. CEW develops hotcold forging and threading technologies to begin producing Nuts and Bolts

    2020 – Upgrading galvanizing works further, increasing capacity. CEW remains the market leader for providing galvanizing solutions. Introduction of 3D printing.
